Which devices are not eSIM-enabled?
You are unlikely to have eSIM support on your device if you have one of the following models:
- iPhone devices from mainland China
- iPhone devices from Hong Kong and Macau (except
- iPhone 13 Mini,
- iPhone 12 Mini,
- iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone XS)
- All Galaxy devices originating from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan
- All Galaxy FE “Fan Edition” models (except Galaxy S23 FE)
- Pixel 3 models originating from Australia, Taiwan, and Japan
- Pixel 3 models purchased with service from U.S. or Canadian wireless carriers other than Sprint and Google Fi
- Pixel 3a models purchased in Southeast Asia and with Verizon service
If you are unsure whether your device supports eSIM, please contact the manufacturer or follow the self-test instructions below.
Is my cell phone eSIM-capable?
To find out if your phone or tablet is eSIM-enabled without outside help, access the device settings. Here are the steps to check (though the names of the menu items may vary slightly from model to model):
- Go to “Settings”
- Select (depending on the model) “Mobile network”, “Connections”, “Mobile data network,” or “Mobile network”
- Click on “Add eSIM” or “Add mobile tariff” (depending on the model)
If you can scan a QR code here, your cell phone is most likely eSIM-enabled.
How do I activate eSIM on my device?
Make sure your device supports eSIM, purchase an eSIM profile from your mobile operator or a third-party provider such as eSIMony, and wait for the activation QR code to be sent to you by email.
Go to “Settings”. Select “Mobile network,” “Connections,” “Mobile data network,” or “Mobile network”. Click on “Add eSIM” or “Add mobile tariff”. Scan the QR code you received from the provider. Alternatively, you can enter the activation code manually.
Once the eSIM profile has been added, follow the on-screen instructions to activate the eSIM. This may involve confirming the mobile provider and selecting the mobile plan.
What if my device is not compatible?
Adapters enable eSIM functionality for devices that are not compatible with eSIM. They work by converting the eSIM into a physical SIM format that can be recognized by older devices.
Get an eSIM adapter that is compatible with your device. Such adapters are available online and in electronics stores. As with normal eSIM use, you will need an eSIM profile from your provider.
Follow the adapter manufacturer’s instructions to load the eSIM profile onto the adapter. Insert the adapter with the loaded eSIM profile into the SIM card slot of your device and verify that it is properly seated and recognized by your device.
After inserting the adapter, your device should recognize the new “SIM card.” Go to your device’s network settings and follow the activation instructions.
